Ukrainians throughout the world share a deep concern over the increasingly intense pressure from the Russian government on President Yanukovych to turn away from Euro-integration.
As reported in the January 28, 2013 issue of the Financial Timeshttp://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/5ca5d2e8-689b-11e2-8c20-00144feab49a.html#axzz2JNydZwK6http://www.lucorg.com/news.php/news/6336 Moscow is now demanding that Ukraine pay a $7 billion dollar penalty to GAZPROM for needing less gas imports from Russia. This is timed to undermine Ukraine's negotiations with the International Monetary Fund and the signing of the Association Agreement with the European Union. These nafarious efforts are part and parcle of the campaign for Ukraine to relinquish control over its gas transit pipeline and join the Moscow-controlled Customs Union.
Also on January 28, 2013 in Kyiv, the National Committee to Protect Ukraine issued an Open Letter to President Yanukovych and Appeal to the Ukrainian People "Away from Kremlin Shackles": http://www.lucorg.com/news.php/news/6334
The signatories call on President Yanukovych to stay the course on Euro-integration. They also state that any effort to hold a referendum on joining the Moscow-controlled Customs Union would be illegitimate and call on the Ukrainian people to fight all efforts in this regard.
Ukraine's freedom is under siege. Through its network of agents and fellow-travellers, the Russian government has worked to undermine Ukraine's efforts to consolidate its hard won independence . Vital energy supplies are being used as a political weapon.
Therefore, we the undersigned support the Open Letter and Appeal of the National Committee to Protect Ukraine. We also urge our governments, as well as all governments that share a common commitment to support Ukraine's Euro-integration, to call on the Russian government to cease and desist in its efforts to undermine the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.
